UK Earth System Model

The UK Earth System Model (UKESM) is a science programme to develop, apply and analyse the next generation of UK Earth system models.

Earth system models are computer simulations of the earth. They combine the atmosphere, ocean, land, ice, and biosphere and are used to look at regional and global climate.

Earth system models reach beyond their predecessors, climate models, which just represent the physical atmospheric and oceanic processes.

UKESM will not only launch the UK’s first Earth system model, but also grow a community of Earth system scientists in the UK.

The programme was established in 2013 by the Natural Environment Research Council and the UK Met Office.
