NCAS early career researchers inspire the next generation through I’m a Scientist
Two early career colleagues from the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS), Eliza Karlowska and Oleg Kozhura, have been helping school students across the UK discover the fascinating world of atmospheric science through the I’m a Scientist programme.
The online initiative connects students directly with scientists through live text-based chats, giving young people the opportunity to ask questions about research, careers and life as a scientist. Between April 2025 and May 2026, Eliza and Oleg took part in 76 chats with 55 schools, reaching an estimated 1,150 students.
Eliza, a research scientist specialising in tropical climate and high-impact weather, used the programme to show students how subjects such as maths and coding are essential tools for understanding our planet. Through discussions about everything from tropical cyclones to computer modelling, she highlighted the multidisciplinary nature of atmospheric science and helped students see how classroom learning connects to real-world challenges.
Meanwhile, Oleg, a Science Delivery Coordinator at the FAAM Airborne Laboratory, shared his experiences of working with an airborne research facility while answering questions on science, careers and his personal interests. His engaging and relatable approach proved hugely popular with students, who voted him the programme’s most popular scientist in summer 2025.
Reflecting on the value of the programme, Oleg highlighted the importance of helping students see scientists as ordinary people with diverse backgrounds, interests and career journeys. By making research more accessible and relatable, initiatives such as I’m a Scientist can encourage young people to see STEM careers as something they can pursue themselves.
