A common framework for leadership at NCAS
The NCAS Leadership Principles have been shaped by senior leaders from across NCAS and reflect a growing understanding of what we want leadership at NCAS to look, sound, and feel like.
Everyone has the opportunity to lead, whether through managing people, leading projects, coordinating scientific activities, or influencing those around them through their expertise and actions. Having a shared understanding of what leadership means helps us work consistently, support one another, and create the culture we want to see across NCAS.
Our six NCAS Leadership Principles are:
- Champion a clear and aspirational vision
- Cultivate an inspiring environment for everyone
- Act with integrity and trust
- Enable the delivery of our mission
- Foster collaboration and use resources responsibly
- Empower staff to reach their full potential
While leadership can take many forms, these principles provide a common framework for how we make decisions, communicate, collaborate, challenge, and support one another. They help ensure that, regardless of role, location or team, we are working towards the same ambitions and modelling the behaviours that enable NCAS to thrive.
In practice, adopting these principles could mean:
- More clearly connecting day-to-day decisions with our long-term vision and strategy.
- Greater transparency during periods of uncertainty, helping to build trust and reduce speculation.
- Leaders actively remove barriers that slow scientific delivery and innovation.
- Stronger collaboration across teams, sites and disciplines, with resources used in ways that best support NCAS as a whole.
- Increased recognition of contributions and successes at every level.
- More consistent support for professional development, mentoring and career growth.
These principles are not intended to be aspirational statements that sit on a webpage. They are designed to inform the way we work together every day and to support the culture we want to build across NCAS.
