Formula E Team’s new racing car design drives climate conversations
Launched at COP28, Formula E Team Envision Racing announced their partnership with Warming Stripes creator Professor Ed Hawkins to inspire climate action.
Formula E is a motorsport using electric racing cars. Envision Racing aims to inspire racing fans to tackle climate change and support the transition to e-mobility and renewable energy.
The colourful graphic, known as the Warming Stripes, was created by Professor Ed Hawkins – a climate scientist at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science and University of Reading. The Warming Stripes are a visual timeline of our changing climate.
To create the design, Professor Hawkins’ replaced numerical data with intuitive colours to help people to understand how the planet has warmed over the last one hundred and fifty years.
The warming stripes show the stark reality of how quickly the planet has heated over the past few decades, combining billions of scientific measurements into one striking image.

The Warming Stripes will feature on Envision Racing’s race car and kit. The Warming Stripes will first appear on the car during the opening race of season 10 in Mexico City on Saturday 13 January 2024.
The stripes will also be incorporated into the team’s Race Against Climate Change programme, and involve international and regional activities taking place throughout the Formula E season to showcase changes that have occurred at race locations using local warming stripes.
Envision launched its Race Against Climate Change fan pledge program in Glasgow in 2021. The campaign encourages fans to make personal commitments to reduce their carbon impact, from reducing waste and sourcing food locally to switching to renewable energy and recycling e-waste. To date, nearly 250,000 pledges have been made.
“Climate change is one of the defining challenges of our time. Every country, region and city is warming. There is no time to waste. Collaboration across different sectors is essential for addressing this issue and providing solutions to reduce the effects of global warming. I’m thrilled to partner with Envision Racing, and together, we will engage new audiences in conversations about climate change and the urgent need for collective action,” explains Professor Hawkins.
