Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Survey 2026
In early 2026, we invited colleagues across the National Centre for Atmospheric Science to take part in our latest Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) survey. 74 colleagues responded, providing valuable insight into staff experiences and helping to shape our ongoing work to create a fair, inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.
The findings present a largely positive picture of working life at NCAS. 99% of respondents agreed that NCAS is an inclusive place to work, while 82% reported feeling comfortable sharing their professional opinions. More than four in five respondents (81%) would recommend NCAS as a place to work.
The survey highlights strong levels of trust, collegiality and collaboration across the organisation. Many staff described NCAS as friendly, supportive and welcoming, with positive working relationships and a strong sense of community.
The findings also identify areas where experiences are less consistent across the organisation. While a majority of respondents (65%) were confident that inappropriate behaviour would be challenged and addressed appropriately, this confidence was not universal. Responses suggest that experiences relating to psychological safety, career development, inclusion and decision-making can vary depending on local context, team culture, and management practices.
A recurring theme throughout the findings is the importance of transparency and consistency. While staff expressed generally positive views of NCAS culture, some respondents identified a need for greater clarity around recruitment, promotion and career progression processes, as well as more consistent communication and practice across teams and sites.
Overall, the survey shows that NCAS has strong foundations on which to build. The findings will help inform future EDI activity and support continued work to ensure that positive experiences are shared consistently across the organisation.
Our organisation’s diversity data has also been updated in line with the latest survey results. Keeping this data up to date supports transparency and helps us better understand who we are as an organisation.
We would like to thank everyone who took the time to complete the survey and share their experiences. Your feedback plays a vital role in helping us create a positive and inclusive environment where all colleagues can thrive.
If you have any questions about the survey findings or our EDI work, please contact Lisa Banton, Head of People, EDI and Workforce Development.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Survey 2024
In January 2024, we invited colleagues across the National Centre for Atmospheric Science to participate in our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) survey. 100 colleagues responded, helping us understand staff experiences and identify priorities for future action.
The report highlights areas where NCAS had improved as an organisation, areas where experiences remained consistent, and opportunities for further progress. It also outlines actions taken to strengthen inclusion across NCAS and the wider atmospheric science community.
Our organisation’s diversity data has also been updated in line with this year’s survey results. Keeping this data up to date supports transparent decision making and highlights who we are as an organisation.
Answers to our EDI surveys are always fully confidential and will only be reviewed in line with NCAS’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion data policy. The information will be used to inform EDI focused activities funded by UK Research and Innovation.
If you have any concerns or questions about the 2024 EDI survey report, or the next EDI staff survey, please contact Lisa Banton, Head of People, EDI and Workforce Development.
