Summer of science: Placement scheme for young people
For the third year running, the National Centre for Atmospheric Science will be offering inspirational summer placements for young people across the UK.
In partnership with Research Placements and Experiences, the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) is developing ways to support young people in their science-related education and careers, particularly those who will be the first in their immediate family to attend university and who are from low-income backgrounds.
This summer, placements hosted by our staff will offer Year 12 students with impactful opportunities to visit research facilities, support science projects, develop new skills in communication and problem-solving, meet positive role models, and improve understanding of STEM careers.
These placements also present a unique chance for our staff to further their professional development, such as interpreting science topics and practices for non-experts, leadership and mentoring, and project and people management.
Building on 2022 and 2023, this year we will be encouraging staff to host students for a fortnight-long research project or a 5-day work experience.
The 2-week long placements will focus on mini-science projects that contribute to NCAS’ research on climate change, air pollution, and extreme weather.
The 5-day placements will provide a way for students to feel part of a science team, while increasing their career-related knowledge and acquiring sustainable skills for future employment.
NCAS staff are encouraged to propose placements by Friday 22 March, and to contact Frances Dee via email at communityforchange@ncas.ac.uk for guidance.
Research Placements and Experiences’ regional coordinators will work with NCAS and manage the student-placement matching process throughout the spring.
