Study atmospheric science

Dates: January 20-24 2025
Location: National Centre for Atmospheric Science, Fairbairn House, University of Leeds

The Introduction to Atmospheric Science training course provides students and early career researchers with a broad overview of atmospheric science, laying down the foundation for more detailed study and fieldwork.

Leading atmospheric scientists will introduce you to the key concepts of atmospheric science, broadening your understanding of atmospheric processes and interactions.

Participants will build their knowledge while developing an awareness of how their work relates to others in the atmospheric science community.

The key areas covered in the course are:

1. Introduction to weather systems (including atmospheric thermodynamics, weather systems, cloud physics, atmospheric boundary layer)
2. Atmospheric composition of the mesosphere, stratosphere and troposphere
3. Air quality and atmospheric aerosols
4. Climate (including variability and modelling, atmospheric chemistry, radiative forcings)

Learning outcomes

We aim for students to:

  • Understand the broad topics of atmospheric science including weather systems, atmospheric physics, atmospheric composition and climate
  • Use this new knowledge to create a route for further detailed study
  • Work in teams to better understand the breadth of study within the atmospheric science community
  • Understand how different research fields connect together to create certain outcomes, perhaps unexpectedly
  • Teaching staff

The course is delivered by experts in the field from the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, other NERC Research Centres, and UK universities.

    Key staff include:

  • Dr Ben Harvey: Research Scientist, National Centre for Atmospheric Science
  • Dr Lisa Whalley: Research Scientist, National Centre for Atmospheric Science
  • Dr Charles Chemel: Research Scientist, National Centre for Atmospheric Science
  • Dr Ioana Colfescu: Senior Research Scientist, National Centre for Atmospheric Science
  • Professor Stephen Mobbs: Director, National Centre for Atmospheric Science
  • Professor Alistair Lewis: Deputy Director, National Centre for Atmospheric Science
  • Professor Suzanne Gray: University of Reading
  • Course schedule

The Introduction to Atmospheric Science Course will take place in person at NCAS Headquarters, Fairbairn House, University of Leeds.

The course will run from Monday 20th January to Friday 24th January 2025. The course will run from 9am-6pm each day with an earlier finish of approximately 2pm on Friday.

    Costs

    Full academic rate £709
    Educational discount rate £541

The education discount may be available to those students or post-docs not eligible for the subsidised rate.

    NCAS subsidised rate £353

The NCAS subsidised rate is available to UK & EU students attending UK universities or students supervised by NCAS staff.

Once you have been offered a place on this course, you will be asked to pay the course fees via the University of Leeds online store.

    Commercial rate

Attendees from commercial organisations should contact training@ncas.ac.uk to discuss the course fee.

The course fee includes all tuition, activities, materials and organised social events.

    Travel and accommodation

Accommodation is not provided as part of the course and students should arrange their own. Students are responsible for arranging and paying for their own transport to and from the course.

    Terms and conditions

    Fees

Attendees are required to pay in full by credit/debit card or provide a valid purchase order from their home organisation by the confirmation deadline. All payments and refunds are processed by the University of Leeds.

    Cancellations/ refunds

Attendee cancellations are subject to a £50 administration fee, plus any accommodation cancellation costs incurred by us, where the cancellation is made more than six weeks (twelve weeks for the Atmospheric Measurement Summer School) before the date of the training course. The remaining balance of the course fee will be refunded.

No refund is payable for a cancellation made within six weeks (twelve weeks for the Atmospheric Measurement Summer School) immediately prior to the training course – in this event the full course fee will remain payable. In the event that a place can be filled by another student then the full fee (less the £50 administration fee) will be refunded once the replacement student has paid in full.

All cancellations must be sent in writing to training@ncas.ac.uk.

    Amendments and cancellations

It may be necessary for us to change the content and timing of a course, the staff, the date or the venue. In the unlikely event of the course being cancelled, we will provide a full refund. For all bookings, the liability of the National Centre for Atmospheric Science/University of Leeds shall be limited to the amount of the fee paid to the National Centre for Atmospheric Science/University of Leeds by the delegate.
