Study Python for atmospheric science

Dates: To be confirmed
Location: To be confirmed

The Data Analysis Tools course will support Python users to read, analyse and plot atmospheric model data.

Through talks and interactive sessions, you will master cf-python and cf-plot Python tools. These tools provide powerful extraction, regridding and visualisation capabilities, and make for quick analysis and data plotting.

How to apply

Applications closed

We encourage masters students, PhD students and post-doctoral researchers working within the atmospheric science community in the UK to attend. To get the most out of the course, you should have previous Python experience or have attended our Introduction to Scientific Computing course.

The course will use the Python 3 versions of cf-python and cf-plot which are available for the Linux and Mac operating systems. Windows users can use a Linux Virtual Machine or the Microsoft Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) to run the software.

Learning outcomes

We aim for students to:

  • Read netCDF, Met Office PP and fields files;
  • Create, delete and modify a field’s data and metadata;
  • Complete data aggregation, selection and collapse by statistical operations;
  • Transform grids and plot contours, vectors, graphs.
  • Teaching staff

    The Data Analysis Tools course is taught by experienced Python users at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science.
